This result identifies well-posedness of an [abstract Cauchy problem](/page/Abstract%20Cauchy%20Problem) with generation of a strongly continuous semigroup. It explains when the initial value problem has a unique solution operator family and makes [semigroup theory](/page/Semigroup%20Theory) the natural framework for evolution equations.
